Contrary to the multi-tasking lifestyle that we lead, studying demands focusing on one thing at a time. Constant devotion of time and attention to a singularly tracked study material, often gets difficult due to the existence of distracting electronics and the restlessness induced due to overuse of social media. Social media constantly distracts us by being so current and finicky. Though, the biggest boon of social media is the sheer accessibility of opportunities to succeed, to meet new people, and to stay updated, it is of utmost importance that we first learn to prioritize our time.

So, in order to help you stay focused and get the most out of your devoted study time, here are 5 fool-proof hacks:

1. Meditate your way to A+B=C

Not only is meditation a way to guarantee superhuman concentration levels, but it also calms the nervous system. It stimulates the brain to achieve better cognitive and intellectual performance. Studies have shown that meditation is responsible for changes in brain functions, increasing students’ practical intelligence and creative thinking. It is the sure shot way to sharpening your memory as well as keeping away restlessness and insomnia, which are very common symptoms of stress.

2. Eat to nourish your brain

We have been told that since walnuts look like miniature brains, they are good for the brains. Well, turns out, they really are excellent for maintaining optimum brain health. Foods containing essential fatty acids like Omega-3, copper, polyphenols are excellent for increased brain power. Wondering which foods contain these wonder components, look no further, here’s a list:

• Vegan Options – Nuts (walnuts, almonds), turmeric, blueberries, broccoli, avocado, spinach, pumpkin seeds, olive oil, coconut oil.

Organize your study space, your time table, your exam day, and your life in general. The more ordered your timeline is, the easier it is to escape chaos and focus. The time tables that you set, should be a doable allocation of study material to the time in question. A clutter-free desk results in a clutter-free mind. You can easily find your required materials, and start studying without having to waste time searching for everything in a mess.

6. Originality is inspirational

Study in the way you find comfortable. You shouldn’t be bothered if it takes you a little while longer than your friend to study a particular topic. Set your own time table, and device your own study techniques like writing down pointers, making flashcards, or just plain highlighting the text. It is always best to trust your own gut when it comes to planning for your future.

                    THIS MONTH: Let’s take a quick look at where things stand for you.

MCAT/PCAT: You should be devoting as much time as possible to your prep now and for the rest of the summer. By mid-July you should take a mock test to see how you’re scoring. If you haven’t made enough progress, it may be time to look for a qualified tutor to coach you. Most people do learn best with at least a little bit of coaching. It is important that a tutor be experienced and qualified. If possible, find someone with multiple years of experience. Do work with the Barron’s MCAT book. It thoroughly reviews all of the strategy for timing, testing, and problem solving.

Sign up to take your test as late in the season as possible to give yourself maximum study time. I suggest late August or the September tests.

LSAT: You will probably need to take the LSAT no later than December. Take a mock test mid-month. If you’re not getting close to a winning score, consider the STEPS to the LSAT program. For a minimal cost it will boost your self-prep with a better study structure, advanced instruction, and connection with other STEPS students.

GRE/GMAT: You may need to take your test as early as October, though some deadlines may allow you to take the test as late as next February or March. By mid-month take a mock test. If you are not scoring where you need, look for a qualified tutor. See my notes about tutors above under MCAT/PCAT.

PREP HINTS:

This month we’re talking about reading comp (RC) which is on all the tests. If you didn’t see my February blog on setting up the RC passage, check that out now.

Once you’ve learned to identify the heart of a passage (the dichotomy, or conflict between two elements) and can analyze the structure of the passage, your next task is to learn tools for working the questions.

When you begin a question, take enough time to orient yourself to it. Is it a detail question or a Big Picture question? Do you understand what the question is asking? Many wrong answers are due to having misunderstood the question stem.

On harder questions most test takers find that they are down to two possible answers and then can’t figure out which one is right. Often, even when you look up the answer, it’s still not clear why their answer is better than yours. Remember that it’s never that an answer is just more elegant. One of those answer choices has a fatal flaw.

To dig deeper you can use a tool that I call the Adversarial Approach. Usually you like one answer choice better than the other, so you already have a bias, which prevents you from thinking clearly. Take the answer that you like and attack it. Try hard to find something wrong with it. You might see something you didn’t see before.

Then take the answer you didn’t like and try to prove that it’s correct. Again, you might see something you didn’t see before. This gives you a much better chance of getting to the right answer and finding the fatal flaw.

The Adversarial Approach can also be used on almost any other type of question in any of the tests.

Yes. Let me run through it level by level.

The L1 exam is multiple choice but has wide syllabus: all asset classes, Corporate Finance, Economics, Financial Reporting and Analysis, Quantitative Methods, and even a heavily weighted (and tricky!) section on Ethics. Although slightly general in nature, I have found it to be great primer to people without a traditional finance/business background. It ensured that I was on solid ground, be it a lunch with the boss or day to day business meetings. Suddenly the Financial Times started making sense to me.

L2 is where you get deep into valuation methods across asset classes. Your ability to read Financial statements is strongly tested here. The curious thing is that valuations come up very often in business, even if you are not working in finance and that the ability to think about the ‘value’ is a huge plus to have.

L3 is very heavy on Portfolio Management and Wealth Planning. What makes it harder is that half of L3 is a subjective exam, so the ability to give ‘to the point’ answers while keeping an eye on the clock is key. Although, I wasn’t going to Portfolio/Wealth Manager anytime soon, the syllabus was great training for getting a big picture view of these jobs.

You’ve got a CFA & are now pursuing an MBA degree, what is the advantage of doing both

Two things drove me to earn the CFA designation: the desire to expand my knowledge (coming as I did from an Engineering background) and to differentiate myself from other applicants in the job market. At that time, it was important for me establish myself in the industry.

Similarly, while the MBA is learning about Operations/Strategy/Negotiations/Change Management/ How Organizations work etc. and breaking into new sectors/geographies; it is also about Networking among people from diverse backgrounds and learning from their experiences. Thus, the MBA makes me a more ‘compete’ person.

Also, the brand recognition of a top MBA and the avenues it opens up can be a huge plus in the long run.

In summary: (MBA = Broad and General Skills) and (CFA= Deep and Specific Financial Skills). So the MBA lets me build on my finance expertise and gives me the choice to break into new areas: General Management, Consulting or go back in finance, albeit with a steeper career trajectory.

What are the pre-requisites to do the CFA exam?

For L1, you can start in the last year of your Bachelor’s program and once you finish your degree, you can sit for L2. You can sit for L3 the next year but note that the charter is awarded only after you have 4 years of approved work experience. Remember that L2 and L3 are only conducted once a year in June, so you cannot rush your way through the charter

So how did you prepare for it? Did you take any financial or economics courses?

I relied on CFA Institute provide books for L1 and studied in a study group with another friend of mine (who is now taking the IAS exam!). Having some company really helped as we were able to talk things over and clarify each other’s doubts. But this wasn’t so hard as I was still a student at IIT Bombay and used to being around books.

For L2 and L3, I studied alone, relying mostly on Schweiser guides. Once you start working, it gets so much harder to lock yourself up in a room and study. Managing a 12 hour/day working day does mean that you have to be very efficient in planning your time. My advice is to start early and keep a regular pace (both of which I did not do!).

What kind of edge are you expecting this certificate to give you in terms of financial security, jobs, salary along with the MBA?

Apart from finance sector jobs which value the CFA greatly, there are a number of synergies that are created by having both the CFA and the MBA. But I will talk about the two primary synergies here.

Firstly, it increases my recognition with all employers. The fact that I earned the CFA while working at full time jobs and cleared it on the 1 attempt every time tells them a lot about my diligence, analytical abilities, and time management skills.

Secondly, finance is an integral part of most jobs today, even in the Consulting and Corporate sectors. My CFA training gives them comfort that no matter what sort of finance problem at hand, I will be able to find a solution to it.

Long story short, not only does the CFA get me a seat at the MBA interview table, it also helps me perform better at my post MBA job.

Social Studying in New York

We often make studying for the CFA unnecessarily hard and lonesome. Let’s take the CFA for example. There are many ways to change that.

For starters, get out of the house

Lets start with Coffee Shops. New York has plenty of coffee options. Birch coffee-Located in the Gaudi-esque Gershwin Hotel. Seating by the counters are often occupied, however walk into the Gershwin lobby and up some dark stairs you would spot their library, tucked in a small loft. Finish an hour of questions on that Schweser guide, followed with ten minutes of people watching on a Sunday afternoon and the study experience for the CFA does not seem that much of a chore any longer.

Housing work bookstore café offers a new experience and feel to study. You could spend days in the bookstore studying and discussing with your studypal with breaks for caffeine, baked goods and savories. This bookstore even has an upper level with smaller tables to hide from the crowd so that you can make an escape into serenity.

D’Espresso would make you feel as if the world had turned sideways, with its crazy interiors. With floors and ceilings appearing to be lined with books, you can get an additional motivation for studying.

Then, there are the libraries. For starters, the New York library with 53 million items and many branches it is a great place to be surrounded by motivated people. With other public libraries such as the Adams free Library, Afton free library offer free internet access as well  as a crèche for learners with children.

So in summary, find your ideal study spot outside the house, find your ideal study buddy and you will enjoy studying for the CFA.

Don’t just study hard, study smart!

Do first things first.

Prior to starting the preparation for CFA, make a study plan. Find a study partner for the CFA on www.studypal.co. Get the best things first.

The second advice would be – start with the most interesting topics. If you like corporate finance more than Quantitative methods, start with Corporate finance. You will finish the first book sooner and this will motivate you for further successes.

Write to memorize.

Take notes – although you may think this is redundant, it may be good for the review phase. Take notes in the books or separately, but try to build a system that will help you review the most important topics and calculating procedures.

Watch out – there are some rules!

Get used to infrastructure – exam questions type (multiple choice, item set & essay), calculator policy (only two types of calculators are permitted), and other rules and procedures. Sooner you get used to these, you will be more successful and calm on the exam.

Repetitio est mater studiorum.

It is hard to memorize so much and reproduce this knowledge in such a short time frame. It is hard to remember all the formulas and concepts. However, repetition can really help you master this amount of content. Focus on the practice problems during repetition. Besides knowledge you gain, this is something that prepares you the best for the exam.

Know your enemy.

Visit the testing centre a day (night) before the exam. Calculate how much time you need to reach the centre. Take into account possible morning rush hour (although the exams are organized on Saturdays and Sundays). Try to eliminate the unnecessary stress prior to the exam.

There is really no secret sauce for passing the exam. You have to learn and practice. However, learning from the experience of other candidates and members, and avoiding some obvious traps, may make you more successful candidate.

Enrolling the CFA program will have an impact on your private life and relationships with your friends, partner and family. If you want to successfully complete the program you will have to dedicate a significant amount of time and effort to the learning process. The CFA program is not very demanding in terms of new knowledge, but it takes a lot of time to go through the entire curriculum and solve decent number of practice problems. You will have to spend certain amount of your free time on the CFA program and make clear cuts in your social life.

Although many people will say that if you organize yourself well, you will manage to achieve both personal and professional goals, it rarely happens that you are a successful business man, the best friend always ready to jump in and an incredible boyfriend/girlfriend or a family man at the same time.

I am often hungrier while writing an article about food rather than while I’m cooking it. Thinking can make us pretty hungry. According to medical researchers, our brain cells need double the energy as the other cells in our body, causing our body to crave food to restore this energy during intellectual activities like test prep.

So if you are preparing for standardized tests and often get the munchies, it is merely your brain insisting on a glucose boost. Sorry to be a damper on a guilt free study binge by stating the obvious, but over-snacking and eating the wrong things during your hunger pangs will certainly be counterproductive. It can cause your brain to get too much glucose and slow down. Not so smart after all!

However, there is nothing better than a healthy snack to keep your mental juices flowing.  So why don’t we make this snack time doubly productive by eating not just healthy but brainy foods too.

There are four main nutritional components that help our brains function to their full potential and even reinforce new brain cells. Here is a list of healthy powder foods that will provide the right nourishment for those long study days.

AVOCADO SMOOTHIE

Serves – 2 glasses
Prep time – 20 minutes

Ingredients:

1 avocado
3 tablespoons chopped dates
5 tablespoons 0% fat greek yogurt
½ cup Soymilk
¾ cup water
2 tablespoons chia seeds

Methods:

Mix the soymilk, water and chia seeds in a glass and leave aside letting the chia seeds absorb the water and fluff up.

Put the avocado, dates and greek yogurt in a blender and blend till they form a smooth paste.

Put the avocado paste in a mixing bowl with the soymilk mix and gently combine the ingredients together with a spatula.

Chill in the refrigerator and drink the cold avocado smoothie during your study break to give your brain a jumpstart!

BEAN SALAD

Serves – 3
Prep time – 20 minutes

Ingredients:

½ cup red beans
½ cup sweet corn
½ cup chopped coriander leaves
¼ cup spring onions
¼ cup chopped walnuts

Dressing:

½ a lime, juiced
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon paprika powder
1 teaspoon honey

Method:

Mix together all the ingredients for the dressing and leave aside.
Put the remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl and toss till the produce have come together nicely.

Mix in the dressing and serve chilled.

Remember to graze through your study days, eat nutritious snacks and keep it light.

Once you decide to enter the CFA program and become the CFA Level 1 Candidate, prior to enrolling the program, check if you have sufficient time for the preparation of the first exam. Don’t enrol the program if you can’t make it. This is something that can be assessed in advance. Wait for the other term, and enrol then. In order to assess whether you can do it or not, use the simple math. Start from your usual schedule and determine how much time in a usual week you can dedicate to learning. An average candidate needs approximately 300 – 400 hours, so you can divide this numbers with the amount of time in a usual week you can dedicate to learning. This will give you approximate amount of weeks necessary for the preparation.

Once you decide to enrol, prior to starting the process decide on the materials and accessories you will use. There are a number of prep-providers, study groups, and gadgets that can make your life easier in the following months. Make sure you choose the items based on which type of person you really are. If you learn best from lectures, buying prep providers videos or real lectures may be the best choice for you. When you finally organize the process – START and don’t look behind. You have immense amount of study materials to go through and a number of practice problems to solve. Many candidates fail (approx. 60%) but you have to give your best and you will manage to complete the process and pass the exam. There is no secret sauce and there are no shortcuts, if you invest your time and effort, it will pay off.

For each of the three levels there are some specifics that will be addressed in other blog posts, but generally there are some things you have to pay special attention no matter the level.

First of all, make sure you are familiar with the exam questions format. No matter how good you understand the material, you have to be efficient on the exam. Make sure you are used to the multiple choice (Level 1), item set (Level 2) and essay questions (Level 3).

Second, make sure you cover as many as possible areas from the curriculum. You have to satisfy certain threshold in each of the topic area in order to pass the exam.

Finally, don’t forget formulas. Try to memorize formulas and review them a day before the exam. It is critical to memorize them, because you will quickly have to remember a large number of formulas on the exam under pressure.
